Okay, I think I’m done recovering now. (Nov. 19th 2023) yea i needed a month
3/5 to maybe a 3.5/5

This book pissed me tf off, not just because of the cliffhanger ending but a so out of left field ending that isn’t even respectable.

I love this series and I loved the first book so much so this was a little disappointing.

I still think its worth continuing and I have so much respect for this author so I am still going to read the next book, but she’s got a LOTTT of work to do to bring the series back to its former glory after this one.

The world building is amazing but the character dynamics were a little aggravating but understandable.

I feel like she didn’t have to make this a trilogy, it could’ve been a duology and ended here but whatever, its not my book. 🤷🏾‍♀️

On to my thoughts while reading this book…..

  This book’s ending felt like a slap in the face. Like I don’t want a slave story, I don’t want to go to another country! I read this story because it was about us, by us and for us, BLACK PEOPLE. OKAYYYY can we stop centering white voices for once. This pissed me off like no!
  The plot twist of Queen Nehanda had no major motive or reason behind it other than just pure hatred likeeeee. If you are gonna have a twist like that give a real reason like oh her family was killed by Maji or something.
  The book was good at showing the spoils of war, family dynamics and world building, but character development was trash but this was so completely unnecessary. We all know Tzain and Amari are supposed to be queen and king, while Zelie and Inan run away together. Or even keep Inan dead and have Roen and Zelie run away together. That’s what was supposed to happen, nice cute duology.
  But noooo we got this and I have to watch a third book where they get tortured and traumatized AGAINNN. So all of this was for nothing!!!

I’m getting mad again just thinking about it.
